Cosmic Shapes & Type Trilogy
A series of somewhat cosmic-inspired, layered paper maquettes featuring watercolor, paint market, typewriter, and hand-cut geometric shapes. Matted and custom-framed as a set.
Here are the titles for each along with a few thoughts I jotted down upon completing each piece…
“Because Space is Unlimited?” (left)
My first piece of 2024, the first after a several month break, and the first in a series I plan to do in this style throughout the year. I’m realizing more and more that I most enjoy expressing myself through visual art when I work in undefined layers. Unsurprisingly, this is a reflection of me - layered and mercurial.
The name of the piece comes from one of the questions my youngest son, Nolan, asked me when he saw me typing the number 8 onto the paper with my electric typewriter (the sound of which never fails to pull him into my room). Completely unbeknownst to him, I had chosen the number 8 just moments before he arrived over my shoulder because it shares its shape with the infinity symbol - as good a reason as any given the cosmic vibe the piece was beginning to take on. I said, “I felt like 8 works well with the space theme,” and without hesitation he replied, “Because space is unlimited?” Quite surprised, I stopped typing and asked, “What’s that got to do with anything?” He answered, “Because 8 looks just like that symbol that means unlimited.” Guess the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree.
“Breaking Into New Space & Time” (center)
This one was more planned out, which made it simultaneously more frustrating and rewarding. I knew I wanted the sequence of squares “opening up” to the watercolor, but getting the sizes and angles right proved more challenging than I expected. I do love the purple, though, and the way the type overlaps at the corners.
“Rings & Beams” (right)
The second in a series of three, somewhat cosmic-inspired pieces. I’m particularly happy with what I was able to do with the typewriter element in this one.
